They had come to know and recognise what visitors came to the area, and indeed what were their expectations from a "hotel". Consequently they unashamedly positioned the renamed Usk Inn as a focus for those who pursue the outdoors be it on foot or Mountain Bike. One of the few hostelries in the area that can usually be counted on to be "open all hours" providing warmth and shelter when conditions are hard or where one can quench the thirst when the heat prevails!
Being slightly off the main drag up station road almost opposite the former railway Station, initially proved a small problem people couldn't find the INN, but word soon spread, and avid mountain walkers and cyclists soon realised that they too could take a left, or right!
The Inn regularly plays hosts to walking and cycling parties, and even offers guides and indeed hire cycles in association with Bi Ped Cycles in Brecon who amongst other things organised the Brecon Beast during 2002.
Why not try the Talybont Trail event organised by www.eventus.co.uk This active event uses Canadian Canoes, footpaths, mountain bikes and MPVs on a beautiful get-away-from-it-all route through the Brecon Beacons.
Talybont provides a gateway into the hills for novice and experienced alike, and is an ideal base.
For those whose interest is equine there are many excellent stables in the area who offer not just day or halfday trekking but also days on end, stopping at pubs on the way of which the Usk Inn is one naturally (why else would we be mentioning it! ).
The National Botanic Garden & Aberglasney are both reached within the hour, and within the hour a further 10 gardens part of the National Gardens Scheme. The famous Powis Castle is more of a 'day out' at 2 hours drive.
Classic car enthusiasts are increasingly fond of the welcome at the Usk, both as a lunch stop and an overnight halt, even the base for the team in the case of several historic rally enthusiats participating in Brecon motor club events.
